The Seleni Institute is honored to partner with Dr. Marissa Long, licensed reproductive psychologist, on the Black Perinatal Mental Health training.

Black birthing people face disproportionately high rates of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, maternal morbidity, and mortality—driven not by race, but by the impact of systemic racism, bias in healthcare, and structural inequities. This course is designed to help healthcare providers, mental health professionals, and birth workers offer culturally responsive, affirming, and trauma-informed care to Black individuals during the perinatal period.

Led by an expert clinician with lived and professional experience, this training centers the voices and realities of Black birthing people and offers a critical examination of how historical and present-day systems affect mental health outcomes. The course provides practical tools and strategies for providers to actively work toward equitable, respectful, and effective care.

Please note: This training centers on the perinatal experience of the Black birthing community in the U.S., though many themes, shaped by racism, bias, and shared cultural roots, resonate across the African diaspora.

Provide culturally sensitive care that truly makes a difference.

"This course was extremely informative, and I learned quite a bit of information that has continued to inform and impact my work with Black birthing people."
